If your Visa is in a passport that has expired or will expire within 6 months of the end of your U.S. visit, you will need to get a new passport. However, you do not need to apply for a new visa. Just bring both your NEW and OLD passport with the valid visa to present to the CBP Officer when you arrive in the U.S.
13.18 Valid visas in expired passports
Visa officers will not put a visa in an expired document and will not issue a visa for a period surpassing the expiry date of the passport or travel document. Occasionally, documents containing valid visas are cancelled or replaced. If a valid visa inside an expired document is ENF 4 Port of entry examinations 2016-03-18 68 presented at the POE along with a valid passport or travel document, the visa is considered valid.
You don’t have to transfer your visa - you can carry both your old and new passports when travelling to or from the UK instead.
What if I have a new passport?
If you have been issued with a new passport since your Australian visa was granted, you must notify us of your new passport details to ensure that your record is up-to-date. Failure to update your passport details may result in delays when travelling to Australia. You or registered organisations may be unable to check your visa details online.
We have two options with updating your passport:
· from your ImmiAccount
· completing Form 929 Change of address and/or passport details (260KB PDF) and returning it to the nearest office of the Department.
If you have renewed your passport (because it has expired, was lost/stolen or your name has changed), you need to transfer your valid visa into your new passport before you use it to travel. This applies regardless of whether you have a physical visa label or an e-visa or other label-less visa.
Q:2- I have a valid Schengen visa but my Indian passport has expired. Can I transfer this visa to my new passport?
No. If you are holding a valid Schengen visa in an expired Indian passport, you may carry both your expired and new Indian passports together and travel between India and the Schengen countries until the visa expires. You do not need to obtain a new visa.
